Chapter Fourteen
The trip to Prescott went by much more quickly than Catharine would have imagined. They passed through several small towns along the way, where they stopped to spend the night and replenish their supplies. Catharine paid little attention to most of them, her mind preoccupied with more important things, like thoughts of marrying Nathan Chasing Elk. It occurred to her that before agreeing to marry him she should have asked him a few pertinent questions, like where he intended for them to live. She was certain he wouldn’t want to live in the East, and just as certain that she didn’t want to make her home on an Indian reservation in the wilds of the Dakotas. She didn’t know how he planned to support her and Leah. She also realized that as much as she knew about Nathan’s past, she really didn’t know very much about him. She didn’t know what his favorite foods were, or his favorite color, or even how old he was. She didn’t know if he believed in God, or if he wanted more children. And what about Leah? Catharine was already fond of the child, but was she ready to be a mother to an eight-year-old?
Suddenly beset by doubts, she glanced over at the man who would soon be her husband. He had given her his hat to shade her face, and she studied him from beneath its brim. His long black hair gleamed in the sunlight; his profile was strong and clean and masculine. He rode like one born to the saddle, his body moving in perfect rhythm with his horse. He had one muscular arm wrapped around Leah’s waist, a half-smile on his face as he listened to something his daughter was saying. It made Catharine’s heart ache in a good way to see the two of them together.
Just then, Chasing Elk looked over at her and smiled. His gaze rested on her face, the love in his eyes filling her with a warmth that rivaled that of the sun as it melted her doubts away. She returned his smile, and for a moment she lost herself in the almost palpable attraction that hummed between them.
They rode all that day, stopping now and then to stretch their legs and rest the horses. Late in the afternoon, Leah fell asleep in her father’s arms.
Catharine looked at the child with a touch of envy, wishing she were the one resting in Chasing Elk’s arms, that it was her head comfortably pillowed on his broad chest. If she were riding with him, she could reach up and stroke his cheek, draw his head down and press her lips to his, feel the heat of his body against her own…
Her cheeks grew hot when she realized he was looking at her again. No doubt he would be scandalized if he could read her mind! She had been taught that virtuous women did not entertain such titillating thoughts. It was quite improper. But she couldn’t help it,
